KRIŽEVCI UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

The institution with the longest tradition in agriculture education

Basic information

Križevci University of Applied Sciences (KUAS) is an independent public higher education institution which continues tradition of the former Royal Agriculture and Forestry College that was established in 1860 in Križevci as the first agriculture and forestry college in the South East Europe.

The present-day university delivers full-time and part-time HE study courses in accordance with the Bologna process. The courses have professional  programme orientation and are structured according to a two-cycle education system. The principle of 60 : 40 in favour of exercises and practical training is respected. Another important aspect of education is development of practical skills and competences  and a commitment to quality assurance.

KUAS delivers the following HE study courses:

A three-year undergraduate professional course Agriculture (Bachelor level, 180 ECTS credits)

Two-year specialist graduate professional courses: (Master level, 120 ECTS credits)

  1. Sustainable and Organic Agriculture
  2. Management in Agriculture

The Bachelor's degree course Agriculture runs over a period of six semesters. This course offers a unique opportunity to develop understanding of agriculture, from the production of crops and animals to the management skills needed to work in agricultural businesses and related industries. During the first two semesters students complete foundation courses which give them a thorough grounding in all aspects of agricultural disciplines. In Semester 3, 4 and 5 students are required to choose from three different program fields or majors: Plant Production, Zootechnique and Management in Agriculture. In Semester 6, students must complete a 12-week work placement or traineeship in different HE institutions and in agriculture-related industries in Croatia or abroad. The traineeship gives students the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills in a real-world environment. This final semester placement significantly improves their employment prospects.

Once the students achieve their qualification there is usually an opportunity to progress to a higher level qualification within the University or outside.

Job opportunities

KUAS graduates are well prepared for the job market and have opportunities to work on family farms as farm owners and professional managers of agricultural production, to run cooperatives, stock companies and different family farm associations, to work  in trade and control of agricultural products, seeds, agricultural machinery, chemicals and production materials.

The University is noted for the high quality of the resources for education. The campus extends over 12000 m² of covered space and includes  lecture rooms equipped with multimedia equipment, staff offices, laboratories, specialist studios, workshops with modern agricultural machinery and the University farm of 90 ha with units of different farm animals, a vegetable garden, a vineyard, and greenhouse. The staff is also highly qualified with most teachers maintaining their professional practice and research within their disciplines.

International cooperation

KUAS has been a coordinator or project partner in many international projects (TEMPUS, INTERREG, IPA). It has recognized the importance of HE internationalization and, therefore, it carries out the following activities:

  • developing international cooperation with partner institutions in Europe and outside
  • encouraging mobility of students, teachers and non-teaching staff  under the frame of the Erasmus+ mobility programme.

The Erasmus program enables students, teaching and non-teaching staff to spend some time abroad in order to learn, teach or attend professional training.

KUAS holds a new ECHE 2021 - 2027, and  has developed international cooperation with higher education institutions under the Erasmus+ mobility programme - KA1 and KA2 activities. Since 2009, the University has been eligible to participate in the Erasmus program and has realized around 400 outgoing and incoming staff and students mobilities. KUAS has signed more than thirty Erasmus+Inter-Institutional Agreements with partners from different European countries.

The University maintains partnerships with many universities, polytechnics and companies in both Programme and Partner countries and  welcomes international students interested in  doing their traineeship or work placement in Croatia. KUAS can offer Erasmus+ work placement or traineeship  supervised by competent tutors. An increasing number of KUAS students use their regular final year traineeship semester as an opportunity to gain international work experience.

Students from European institutions of higher education, who have signed the Erasmus Bilateral Agreement with KUAS, may spend one or two semesters studying at our place.

Note! The courses for foreign students are carried out in the form of consultancy with professors of the chosen modules.
